What mat should I buy for Pilates?
With the influx of online Zoom classes, making sure you have the right kit to get the most out of your classes can be a little bit daunting!
Please note, that what you need from a Pilates mat is different to what you need from a general Fitness or Yoga mat.
The main things I think are important to factor in when purchasing a mat specifically for pilates are:
- Is it thick enough to cushion my spine and knees?
You spend a fair amount of time lying on your back in pilates, and the odd exercise on your knees too. If the mat isn’t cushioned enough, you will likely end up with a little bit of bruising to the spine/ kneecaps, and no one wants that, especially not after a Pilates class! I recommend no less than 6-8mm thickness (the average thin yoga mat is around 3mm) and the thicker, the better!
- Does the mat have good grip?
No one likes to slip out of a plank when it is hard enough as it is, so make sure the mat specifies that it has good grip so your hands and feet stay where you want them to!
- Will this mat last me a long time?
Let’s face it, most mats are made out of plastic, whether they are good or bad quality. Companies are trying their hardest to create more eco-friendly options, some with cork on top, but the fact remains, plastic is plastic.
If you can, I would highly recommend buying a mat for life – making that commitment to purchasing something that keeps its quality and that you’ll love to work out on again and again for years to come.
